The American International School of Bucharest (AISB) is the oldest and largest international school in Bucharest, Romania. It was founded in 1962 by the American Embassy. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and recognized by the Ministry of Education in Romania. AISB is an IB World School, offering the Primary Years Program (Early Learning to Grade 5), Middle Years Program (Grades 6 to 10) and Diploma Program (Grades 11 and 12). Graduates of AISB receive the US Diploma of Graduation as well as the IB Diploma and attend prestigious universities in the US, UK, The Netherlands, Denmark, Canada and other parts of the world, as reflected in our most updated HS Profile . Students at AISB go on to various careers after their college graduation and the school maintains a strong relationship with its alumni. The AISB Alumni Association keeps the community updated on their dwellings in their bi-annual World Magazine, the best read publication of AISB.
AISB is situated in Voluntari, right outside of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, and benefits from a purpose built 10-hectare campus opened for students in 2001. AISB educates around 1,000 students who come from 65 countries around the globe and employs around 300 members of staff, who come from all around the world. Countries best represented among students and staff are: USA, Romania, Turkey, China, Italy, UK, Israel. The school is separated into three sections: Early Learning Center (students from 2 years old to 6 years old), Elementary School (students from Grade 1 to Grade 5) and Secondary School (students from Grade 6 to Grade 12).
At AISB students participate in a variety of co-curricular activities outside of their usual school day. The Bat Signal blog reflects only some examples of the amazing projects that our students and faculty enjoy in class every day. AISB is part of CEESA and students participate in sports tournaments as well as Model United Nations, Speech & Debate, Math, Robotics competitions. AISB students have established, run and publish their own publication – very well read around the school community and worldwide The Bite .
Parents are quite involved in their children’s education at AISB and are able to keep up with the learning process and other activities as well as create events of their own through the Parent and Teacher Organization. Every week and every month parents are kept up to date with what is going on in the school through the newsletters that reach their inboxes directly.
Much like every school in the world, AISB had to very quickly adapt and change in the face of the 2019 pandemic. On the COVID Response page of the school’s website you can read about the measures taken to ensure students’ and teachers’ security and safety, as well as schooling plans and updates adapted to the times.
