Stonyhurst College

Community

At Stonyhurst we offer unparalleled opportunities for the development of outstanding individuals. We believe that, with the right support, every single young person can achieve their personal best in all they do.

There are 465 pupils at Stonyhurst College and 258 at our prep school, Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall; most are full boarders and there are equal numbers of boys and girls.

Set in 500 acres in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley, pupils have the space to focus upon the opportunities they have. We are one hour away from Manchester by car, and just over two hours from London’s Euston Station by train.

Academic

Small tutor groups and individual attention ensures our pupils achieve excellent results. Our leavers gain places at Oxford, Cambridge and other good Russell group universities as well as universities overseas including Harvard. We now also offer the International Baccalaureate diploma as well as A levels. For the right young person, the IB gives an outstanding preparation for university level study and opens the door to top American and European universities.

In a competitive world, getting the right experience to complement academic prowess can make all the difference for young people entering work. Our impressive, global network of parents and alumni are well placed to offer a wealth of opportunity to current and former pupils.

Pastoral

Boarding at Stonyhurst is centred upon excellent pastoral care in a happy, well-ordered environment, in high-quality accommodation.  Boys board in year-groups (called ‘playrooms’), and are cared for by their playroom master and his team. For girls, there are two boarding houses: one for Lower Line (years 9 to 11) and another for Higher Line (the sixth-form). Each is run by a housemistress and her team.

Our busy weekend activity programme includes trips to the theatre or sports events; there are cultural excursions to places such as York or Liverpool, or walks in the region’s glorious countryside. Everyone attends Mass in St Peter’s Church on Sunday morning.

Ethos

As a Jesuit school, Stonyhurst seeks to enable each individual pupil to thrive, by enabling them to find, develop and use their unique talents. We believe the distinctive nature of Stonyhurst, informed also by an extensive volunteering programme, helps to ensure that the strong leadership qualities many pupils develop are tempered with a thoughtful compassion and awareness of others.

Sport and Cultural

Co-curricular activities

We have a national reputation for rugby and, as a fully co-educational school, a very strong reputation also for hockey and netball. Our musicians have recently toured to Europe and the Far East. Drama and dance have never been stronger, with many pupils achieving nationally recognised arts awards. What’s more, we have recently seen huge success in outdoor pursuits, with well over 100 pupils achieving Duke of Edinburgh’s awards in the past 12 months. The Combined Cadet Force is one of the oldest, and most distinguished in the country.

All of these opportunities, which include over 100 clubs and societies, and a wide range of distinguished visiting speakers each term, along with close one-to-one tutorial and pastoral support, help to develop character and expand horizons.
