Guilds, services and the special significance of sailing

In terms of holistic personal development, extracurricular activities play an essential role in Louisenlund's pedagogy. Experiencing nature, character development and social responsibility are firmly anchored in the Louisenlund pedagogy.

Pupils at Louisenlund have access to a wide range of activities - from sport, art and culture to business, politics, social issues and technology, such as: THW, cutter sailing, Rwanda coffee, biotechnology, agroforestry, debating society and many other topics. In addition, there are honorary posts, services, individual activities and open offers. This thematic richness enables a multi-layered education that goes far beyond traditional learning.

The free choice of guilds allows students to realize their own interests or try out new things and expand their experience. They meet students from different year groups and school types to learn together in practice and experience how teams work. They exchange ideas, give and receive feedback and strengthen their communication and critical thinking skills.

Importance of sailing for the personal development of pupils

Louisenlund offers a variety of sports such as soccer, volleyball, tennis and field hockey. Of these, sailing is a particular highlight and an integral part of our educational program. The campus, picturesquely situated on the banks of the Schlei, a fjord of the Baltic Sea, has its own safe sailing harbor. Here, under the watchful guidance of experienced sailing instructors, students discover the magic of wind energy and the art of sailing. They not only learn how to navigate the boat, but also develop a deep understanding of weather and water conditions. Depending on their individual abilities, the sailors can choose between different boat classes.

With professional coaches, modern equipment and a strong community, the young sailors receive targeted support. Regatta training, strategic competition preparation and participation in national and international competitions are at the heart of the program. Louisenlund thus offers the perfect balance between sporting and academic excellence to prepare students for the future in the best possible way.

“plus sailing” - setting sail towards the Abitur

With the introduction of the “plus sailing” program, there is an even greater focus on sport sailing. The optimal combination of academic education and the pursuit of a sporting passion is particularly relevant here. The short distances between home, school and sailing contribute to optimization.Sailing takes place in the Optimist, ILCA and J70 boat classes. While the Optimist represents the introduction to sailing for the younger age groups, the ILCA and J70 represent sporty and competition-oriented boat classes for the older age groups.

Training together and taking part in regattas promotes a sense of belonging. The pupils become independent and gain self-confidence. Sailing also trains solution-oriented thinking and makes physical principles tangible in a fun way. Children and young people improve their physical fitness, balance and coordination. Responsibility in sailing is fundamental. Every sailor is assigned a boat for which they take responsibility. This includes not only good handling when sailing, but also maintenance in summer and winter. The training consists of water training and athletic training. Water training takes place throughout the entire year. In addition to boat handling, the focus is on tactics and strategy. Athletic training emphasizes strength, endurance, and coordination, which can take place, among other locations, in the fitness center on the educational campus.Training camps complement the weekly training sessions. These camps can take place both during the school term and during holidays. Participation in ILCA regattas in northern Germany is generally planned. In the J70 class, the goal is to compete in the Junior Bundesliga as well as in regattas in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg. It will also be possible for students to complete classwork or exams during training camps under the supervision of the respective coach.

Our school system provides ample flexibility. Between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., not only do regular lessons take place, but also sports and guild activities. This means that students can go sailing at any time when they are not attending a seminar. It is important that neither academic education nor sailing is neglected. We strive to ensure the best possible balance between academic pursuits and sports. Students are encouraged to perform well academically in order to gain greater flexibility for sailing. You can find more information about the "plus-Sailing" talent development program here:
