The school was initially established to serve the children of expatriates working with international organizations, particularly as Copenhagen became a hub for the United Nations with the opening of the first global warehouse for UNICEF. Over the decades, CIS has remained deeply connected to its roots, with the UN continuing to be the primary employer of many parents whose children attend the school. Our 4th graders, for example, are involved in a pilot project to sort and recycle more of the school’s waste. This hands-on experience is crucial in helping them understand the real-world implications of what they learn in the classroom.In addition to environmental sustainability, CIS is deeply committed to promoting social principles through its DEIJB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, and Belonging) initiatives. These principles are not just theoretical; they are actively practiced within the school community. Policies on discrimination and bullying have been updated, and the school has launched various initiatives to strengthen students' sense of belonging and community engagement. The school was officially named Copenhagen International School in 1968, and in 1969, it became one of the six founding members of the International Baccalaureate. In 1973, CIS became the second school in Europe to be accredited by the European Council of International Schools. In 1987, the school established a preschool program, and in 1993, it merged with Copenhagen International Junior School, moving to a new location in Hellerup.
