Creating a Culture of Inclusion: The DEIJB Initiatives at CIS

In today’s rapidly evolving global society, the need for diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) within educational institutions is more critical than ever. Copenhagen International School (CIS) aims to position itself at the forefront of this movement with principles that are deeply embedded into the fabric of the school’s environment and educational framework. Under the guidance of dedicated professionals like the DEIJB Coordinator at CIS, the school is transforming its approach to education, aiming to create a more inclusive, supportive, and enriching environment for all students and staff.

The Emergence and Role of DEIJB at CIS

The DEIJB initiative at CIS began in earnest in 2022, following a period of student activism and a change in school leadership. The realization that the best possible education is one that acknowledges and celebrates diversity spurred the school to integrate these principles across all aspects of the institution. This commitment to DEIJB was not a top-down mandate but emerged organically from the community—faculty, staff, and students alike—who shared a passion for social justice and a belief that these values are integral to academic excellence. To start this journey, CIS formed a DEIJB Team composed of volunteers from the school community. This team became the driving force behind the school’s initial DEIJB efforts, organizing meetings, workshops, and discussions aimed at deepening the school’s collective understanding of diversity and inclusion. One of their significant achievements was a professional development session for nearly 300 staff members, where students shared their personal experiences with inclusion at CIS. This session provided valuable insights and laid the groundwork for more inclusive practices in the classroom and beyond.Another critical step was conducting a survey among faculty, staff, students, and families to gauge their experiences with diversity and belonging at CIS. The feedback from this survey informed the creation of a "Statement of Inclusion and Belonging," which was later ratified by the school Board. This statement is now a cornerstone of CIS's identity, clearly articulating the school's commitment to these values and setting a standard for accountability.

Transitioning to Strategic DEIJB Implementation

Building on the momentum from the previous year, the DEIJB Coordinator transitioned from leading an informal team to assuming a more formal role within the school. In August 2023, the DEIJB Team embarked on an ambitious project to develop a multi-year strategic plan for implementing DEIJB across the entire school. However, they soon realized that to effect meaningful change, they needed a deeper understanding of the school’s current strengths and areas for growth regarding diversity and inclusion. This realization led to the engagement of a consultant to help design a comprehensive DEIJB “school climate survey.” This survey, aimed at faculty, staff, and students in grades 6-12, has provided crucial data that will guide the development of the school’s strategic plan.In addition to these long-term planning efforts, CIS has been proactive in implementing immediate DEIJB initiatives. The school has updated its policies on bullying, child safeguarding, and workplace discrimination, and established a centrally located "Serenity Space" for prayer and contemplation, reflecting the diverse faith backgrounds within the community. CIS has also begun forming affinity groups for various identities and activism groups for students and faculty, further promoting a sense of belonging and support.Participation in community events like the 2023 Pride Parade and inviting guest speakers to address social justice issues are just a few examples of how CIS is integrating DEIJB into the daily life of the school. These activities not only enrich the school culture but also align with CIS's core values and the newly adopted Statement of Inclusion and Belonging.

Preparing Students for a Complex, Interconnected World

Today’s young people face a world vastly different from what previous generations experienced. Globalization and technological advancements have created an interconnected society where cross-cultural understanding and digital literacy are paramount. At CIS, these competencies are not optional extras but essential skills that are woven into the curriculum and school activities. One of the key roles of the DEIJB Coordinator is to ensure that the school’s approach to education prepares students not only for academic success but also for the complex social realities they will encounter. In a world where misinformation and disinformation are rampant, and where artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the landscape of information dissemination, critical thinking and media literacy have become crucial skills. CIS aims to equip its students with the tools to navigate these challenges, fostering a generation of informed, thoughtful, and engaged global citizens. Moreover, the importance of social skills, empathy, and collaboration cannot be overstated. In a highly digitized world, where face-to-face interactions are often supplanted by virtual ones, the ability to build and maintain meaningful human connections is more important than ever. CIS recognizes this and strives to create a learning environment where students can develop these essential social skills alongside their academic achievements. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a blurring of boundaries between work, school, and personal life. This has led to an increased risk of burnout, even among young people. CIS is keenly aware of this challenge and is committed to teaching students the importance of setting boundaries and maintaining a healthy balance between their academic responsibilities and personal well-being. By modeling and promoting just and sustainable ways of living, CIS is preparing its students for a future where they can thrive both personally and professionally.

Addressing the Challenges of Today’s Youth

Isolation, exacerbated by the over-reliance on digital interactions, is one of the significant challenges faced by today’s youth. Many students, especially those in international schools like CIS, find themselves conducting much of their social lives online, leading to a reduction in meaningful in-person interactions. This trend has been particularly pronounced following the COVID-19 lockdowns, which disrupted traditional socialization patterns.CIS is addressing this challenge by enhancing its extracurricular offerings and fostering a sense of community through inclusive activities and programs. These initiatives, embedded within the DEIJB framework, aim to provide students with opportunities for face-to-face interactions and the development of strong, supportive social networks. From sports and after-school clubs to affinity groups and community events, CIS is creating an environment where students can connect with their peers, build resilience, and thrive both academically and socially. The school’s commitment to DEIJB also extends to its approach to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, which differs in several ways from the typical Danish gymnasial education. While the IB is an international curriculum, it shares similarities with the Danish STX program in its academic rigor and preparation for university-level education. However, the IB’s multicultural content and accelerated two-year structure set it apart, offering students a unique educational experience that is both challenging and enriching. The diverse student body at CIS brings a wealth of perspectives to the classroom, enriching the educational experience for everyone. Students at CIS engage with a curriculum that is informed by a wide range of cultural viewpoints, preparing them for life in an increasingly globalized world. This diversity is not just celebrated but is also deliberately cultivated through the school’s DEIJB initiatives, which ensure that all students feel included, respected, and valued for their unique contributions.

The Future of DEIJB at CIS

The journey towards a more inclusive and equitable educational environment at CIS is ongoing. The school’s commitment to DEIJB is evident in its strategic planning, its proactive initiatives, and its dedication to creating a supportive community where everyone belongs. As CIS continues to implement its DEIJB initiatives, it is setting a standard for what a truly inclusive school can be.By preparing its students to navigate a complex, interconnected world, CIS is not only providing them with the knowledge and skills they need for academic success but also equipping them to become responsible, empathetic, and engaged global citizens. As the school moves forward with its DEIJB initiatives, it will continue to serve as a model for other educational institutions, demonstrating that diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging are not just ideals but essential components of a modern, effective education.children-sitting-in-circle-CIS
