Figures from The International Education Benchmark for New Zealand, produced by the education consultancy, Study Move, have shown that the number of international students applying to universities in New Zealand is increasing and that education consultants are playing a significant role in the upward trend.

All eight universities reported an increase in revenue from international student fees in 2016. The universities also reported an increase in international student enrolment in 2016 with a total of 26,442 international students enrolled, representing 16 per cent of the total student population.

International student fees 

These students are providing a steady revenue stream for the New Zealand economy. The total revenue from international students in 2016 was NZ $1.1 billion (US $0.8 billion) making it the largest international student fee revenue within the New Zealand international education sector.

Over 57 nationalities are represented by these students with China representing 37 per cent of the total number of international students with 4,644 students. The United States, India, Malaysia and Japan represent a further 30 per cent of the total.

The role of education consultants 

The report revealed the role that education consultants have to play in recruiting students from overseas.
